An advance medical directive (AMD) is a legal document that allows a person to specify the medical treatment he wants and does not want in case he becomes incapable of making his desires known. The Catholic Church has stated in many documents (including the Charter for Health Care Workers), that the right to make medical decisions belongs properly to the patient. This principle is based upon each person’s dignity and right to self-determination. Human freedom has always been extolled by the Church, and this doctrine is equally applied to the right of individual persons to make decisions about their own treatment.
